Flu Prevention

INFLUENZA (FLU) PREVENTION
Northeast Homeland Security Regional Advisory Council (NERAC)

Every year, 1 out 5 people get the flu. In Massachusetts alone, state health officials estimate that an average of 5,000 residents end up hospitalized each year due to complications from the flu. Up to 800 die from these complications. The challenge was to make a memorable campaign for a very simple message. After a very extensive search we found fun archival footage from 50s and 60s health films to educate people about the simple strategies to help prevent the flu (and potential pandemics): washing hands, covering coughs and sneezes, getting vaccinated, and staying home when sick. The tagline “It’s up to YOU to stop the FLU!” is simple and effective. The archival footage was treated with a contemporary graphic look and together with a contemporary music track resulted in a highly entertaining message.

Results

The campaign made its debut earlier this fall – just in time to help lower the risk of a swine flu pandemic. The TV PSA won a CINE Golden Eagle! Stay tuned for campaign results.
